Why Hirab? In the early 1990s Thelma and Peter developed a planning package for small business start-up. It was technically an effective and successful piece of software. Unusually for pre-Windows programs, it was easy to use for people with absolutely no computer experience. In response to requests from a number of quarters, we created a version which could more easily be applied to existing businesses. This we called Help, I'm Running A Business, or HIRAB. Unfortunately our commercial skills were not as good as our software development and, although Start-up and Hirab were widely used in enterprise centres and colleges up and down the country, the income we received was negligible. If we had received a fiver for every pirated copy which existed, we would have been quite comfortable. In 1998 Peter set up a web site as a resource for his students. Finding a suitable domain name is not always as easy as it looks. Eventually he settled for the HIRAB acronym as something unlikely to be confused with others. It has gone through a number of transformations in its few years of existence and is now our joint home on the Web. |
